There are iii basic categories of requirements that must be met for licensure: Education, Examinations and Experience.

Education

You must have earned one of the following degrees or degree combinations:

1) An accredited degree, as described in subparagraphs A & B of this paragraph:
A) Available of Science caste in engineering from an EAC/Abet accredited plan in the United States or Lath designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accordance, or the list of substantially equivalent every bit documented past ABET.
B) A Board-approved combination of a Bachelor'south degree in ane of the mathematical, physical, or engineering sciences and a graduate caste in engineering from a university with an EAC/ABET accredited undergraduate plan in the aforementioned bailiwick of technology.

two) A non-accredited degree every bit described in subparagraphs A & B of this paragraph:
A) Bachelor's degree in engineering technology from a TAC/ABET accredited program.
B) A Bachelor's or graduate caste in mathematical, physical, or engineering science canonical by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers.

All degrees or combination of degrees must have at least:

• eight hours of math beyond trigonometry (courses such equally calculus and differential equations), and
• 20 hours of engineering sciences (courses such as mechanics, thermodynamics, electrical & electronic circuits, materials science, transport phenomena, reckoner engineering, etc.)

All foreign degrees from countries other than those listed in 1)A) above must accept a Foreign Credential Evaluation and must be translated into English language.

Examinations

All applicants for licensure must take and laissez passer the Texas Ethics of Engineering examination. The Texas Ethics of Engineering Exam is an open book examination concerning the Texas Engineering Practice Deed and the Board Rules, which should be completed and submitted with a license application. Applicants must too take and pass or authorize for waivers of two examinations - the National Council of Examiners for Applied science & Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination and the NCEES Principles and Exercise of Engineering (PE) test.

The FE exam is administered past NCEES throughout the year.

The PE examination is an eight-60 minutes test and is given twice a year at several locations in Texas (certain PE tests are given only in one case per yr). The PE exam testing dates are scheduled for April and October. Individuals may register with NCEES to have the Atomic number 26 test without submitting an application to the lath. Applicants with appropriate feel must apply and become blessing to take the PE exam.

Experience

Bones Requirements

You must meet the following experience requirements prior to application with the Board:

1. With an accredited engineering caste you lot must have a minimum of four years of agile practice in engineering science work, of a character satisfactory to the Board, indicating that you are competent to be placed in responsible charge of such work.

ii. With a non-accredited degree yous must have a minimum of 8 years of the same type of work required of those candidates with an accredited technology degree.

Types of Experience

During your commencement few years of feel after graduation, information technology is imperative that you place an emphasis on gaining experience that is adequate for licensing purposes. Failure to become licensed can severely limit your potential professional growth.

This experience must demonstrate a clear apply of your engineering knowledge, engineering education, and engineering judgment to perform the job, be progressive, of an increasing standard of quality and responsibility in one ascendant subject field. Although information technology is recommended that the engineering feel be obtained while working under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer, this is not a requirement for licensure.

Feel that is considered most acceptable for licensure purposes generally falls into one of two categories: design or analysis.

Blueprint - The most mutual type of acceptable experience is design. The common denominator in all design projects is the option and use of recognized engineering principles and methodology to make up one's mind a solution to a problem. The terminal event of design work will almost always be details, plans, or specifications for use in creating a finished product.

Analysis - The 2d mutual type of acceptable experience is analysis. Common features of assay activities include the use of mathematical modeling and acceptable data collection techniques to appraise a problem, and the act of making a learned recommendation based on belittling findings. An analysis activity will almost always result in a conclusive report or recommendation.

It should be noted here that many other types of activities would also be acceptable if your participation in those activities can be described in terms of pattern or analysis. Past asking yourself if you tin describe your activity in terms such as "I calculated..., I designed..., I analyzed..., I recommended...," you can nearly assure yourself that you lot are describing blueprint and analysis.

Documentation

While gaining experience, information technology is every bit disquisitional that you document it in such a mode that yous can summarize it for the Board. Equally you go most your weekly tasks, you should continue a detailed diary of your activities: the starting and ending dates of the project(due south) on which you worked, proper noun and accost of each employer, job championship(s), the name, nowadays addresses and phone numbers of the engineers and other persons with which you personally worked who can serve every bit a reference to substantiate your experience, identification of the project, the scope of the projection, and the technology activities that yous personally performed.

This data will be transferred from your diary into a summary called the Supplementary Feel Tape (SER) and will be submitted with your application for licensure. It should range from most vi to 12 pages and fairly describe the technology activities that you have performed for your entire applied science career, starting with the first appointment after graduation from college.

The SER is to be written in the commencement person describing in active technology verbs the engineering piece of work that you specifically designed, calculated, evaluated, analyzed, etc.
You are required to submit at least iii (iii) confidential reference statements which must be from currently licensed professional engineers who are familiar with the work you lot draw in your SER. (If you lot are applying for an original license and requesting an examination waiver you must submit five (v) references from currently licensed professional engineers [P.E.]). Yous select the references and they will verify the quality and scope of the piece of work that you lot describe in your SER and will provide the Lath with an cess of your graphic symbol and suitability for licensure on the Reference Argument Form. A professional person engineer who is familiar with your work and not your supervisor will be acceptable equally a reference. Professional engineers who take non worked with you may review and gauge your documented feel and serve equally a licensed engineer reference. Such review will be documented on the Reference Argument Class.

References

If not requesting exam waivers, iii (three) references are required from currently licensed P.East.s. If requesting exam waivers, and so 5 (5) references are required from currently licensed P.East.due south. The professional engineers can exist licensed in any jurisdiction. The P.Due east. references non licensed in Texas must provide a copy of their current pocket menu or other documentation to verify an active license.

Board Rule §133.51(b) allows for a reference who did not piece of work with the applicant to review and gauge the SER. An applicant might ask any of the references that are familiar with the applicant to review and judge the feel. The reference shall mark the appropriate box on the reference Argument (Character and Review of SER only for Purpose of Reference Argument).
Follow the instructions on the back of the reference argument to request your reference statements. Ship a signed copy of your SER to those references that will verify your engineering experience.
